From the article: Where to Buy an iPhone
Many iPhone owners have waited hours - or even days - in line to get their prized new phone. These waits aren't just boring hours of sitting, though. They often include games, movies, tents, food, and more. Share your stories of what you've seen, and done, waiting in line to buy an iPhone. Share Your Experiences

Waited 4 hours...

I know it's not a long time considering some stories, but it was actually a lot of fun. We made friends with the groups around us, thankfully in the reserve line, we were also able to take pity on those in the purchase line. We were almost on TV, but the line moved - and who was going to wait around and talk to a reporter? I thought Apple did a nice job of supplying people with water and doughnuts. They were cheering as we'd walk in and leave. It was all orderly, except when a group tried to get in front of us. Also, it was wise to have AT&T people standing by to help, but they brought Dell laptops, which was just weird to see in the Apple store.

4 iPhones, 4 lines

I've waited in line for every iPhone so far, but the iPhone 4 took the longest- about 4 hours. The quickest was the iPhone 3G, which I waited for at an AT&T store for about 40 minutes. Waiting for the iPhone 4 included Apple Store employees handing out cookies, chewy fruit snacks, and water, which was great, since we were waiting so long.
