iPhone 4S

I bought an iPhone 4S because my home and work computers are also apple and I was told by friends that it would simply be more compatible to use an iPhone than an android smart phone.
I was disappointed to realize after purchasing that I needed to also upgrade my OS from Snow Leopard to Lion (there's another US$50 NZ$80 I hadn't planned to spend) in order to get iCloud to work. And then once I've done that iCloud tells me it can't use the photo stream (photo syncing) unless I have the most updated version of iPhoto (There's another US$20 I hadn't planned to spend). None of these requirements are stated on the iPhone website as far as I can see.
I thought that by purchasing the iPhone 4S rather than the iPhone 4 or an android phone I was paying more, but getting a better deal and a phone with more functionality. Instead I have ended up with a phone that has costs me far more than I wanted to spend, just to get it up and running at a basic level. While the apple team have been very helpful with all my queries, I am disappointed that I needed to spend all that time on the phone with them to begin with.
I am very disappointed because in the past I have found Apple products very easy to use and I haven't needed to spend extra money on lots of add-ons. But obviously this is no longer true.
