Is the iPhone a Camera Phone?

The answer to the question “is the iPhone a camera phone” is a little tricky.

Technically the answer is yes, the iPhone is a camera phone. The more specific, you get, though, the less useful that answer is.

The term “camera phone” dates back to the early days of including digital cameras in cell phones, when that inclusion was still unusual (these days, of course, it’s more unusual for a phone not to have a camera than for it to have one). It essentially just referred to a cell phone with a digital camera in it.

So, yes, technically the iPhone is a camera phone. But it’s much more than that, too.

Because it has a web connection, PDA functions, and many other features, the more appropriate term for the phone, and the more modern one, is a smartphone.

Call the iPhone a camera phone if you like – you won’t be wrong - but it’s probably more accurate to call it a smartphone.
