How to Check the Size of Apps on Your iPhone

See what's taking up all the room in your iPhone's memory

What to Know

  • On an iPhone or iPod touch: Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Tap an app to see its size. Tap Delete App to remove its data.
  • Find an app's size on an iPhone still using iTunes: In iTunes > Apps, right-click an app and choose Get Info. Click File and find Size.
  • The iTunes method isn't as accurate because it deletes only the app and not its accompanying data.

This article explains how to figure out which apps on your iPhone are taking up the most space so you can delete them and free up more room to store music, movies, apps, and more. Instructions in this article apply to iOS 12 and iOS 11.

Find iPhone App Size on the iPhone or iPod touch

Checking how much space an app takes up on an iPhone is more accurate because the actual size of an app isn't just the app itself. Apps also require preferences, saved files, and other data. An app that takes up 10 MB when you download it from the App Store can become many times larger after you start using it. You can only tell how much space those additional files need by checking on your device.

To find out how much storage space an app requires on an iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app, then go to General > iPhone Storage.

Older versions of iOS have a Storage & iCloud Usage setting.

  2. The iPhone Storage screen displays an overview of the storage used and available on the device. Beneath it is a list of installed apps, starting with the ones that use the most data. Tap an app to see detailed information.

  3. On the app storage screen, App Size shows the amount of space the app takes up. Documents & Data includes the saved files the app creates when you use it. For example, in a podcast app, this is the combined size of all downloaded episodes.

On older versions of iOS, tap Manage Storage to see this list.

  4. Tap Delete App to remove the app and its data.

  5. Alternatively, on iOS 11 and up, tap Offload App to remove the app from the device but keep its documents and data information. You'll create more space without losing the content created with the app.

  6. You can always re-download apps from your Apple account, but you may lose your saved data.

Find iPhone App Size Using iTunes

Using iTunes only tells you the size of the app itself, not all of its related files, so it's less accurate. You can still use iTunes to get an iPhone app's size.

As of iTunes 12.7, apps are no longer part of iTunes. That means that these steps aren't possible anymore. But, if you have an earlier version of iTunes, they still work.

  1. Launch iTunes.

  2. Select the Apps menu in the upper-left corner.

  3. A list of the apps you downloaded from the App Store or installed displays.

  4. To find out how much disk space each app uses, use one of these methods:

    • Right-click the app, then choose Get Info.
    • Click the app icon, then press Cmd+I on Mac or Ctrl+I on Windows.
    • Click the app icon, then go to the File menu and choose Get Info.
  5. A window displays information about the app. Click the File tab and look for the Size field to see how much space that app requires.

Update a Full iPhone

Consistent storage problems may block you from updating your iPhone, given the space that iOS update packages require. Don't forego the update; use special techniques to update your iPhone when it doesn't have enough storage space to install the update.
