The first time you connect your iPod, iTunes will download all the songs in your library on to your iPod. Be prepared for this to take some time. Syncing 6179 songs for me took about 45 minutes.
NOTE: During the sync, don’t switch over to other parts of iTunes, just let it run. Interrupting this first sync can cause problems. Feel free to use other programs, though.
