Most of the iPod accessories aimed at exercisers, especially runners, come in the form of armbands that hold the iPod. But iXoundWear has got a new place for you to put your iPod during exercise: on your head, thanks to its new line of iPod hats.
The Running Cap for iPod nano is one of these hats. It’s a regular baseball hat with an adjustable Velcro strap that features a slot for a first- or second-generation iPod nano, a place to store the earbud cords, and loops to secure the earbuds in place. When wearing it, the iPod sits at the back right side of your head.
The design is smart — it’s easy to access the iPod while exercising and the cord-management system keeps the earbud cords in place, off your neck, and prevents them from falling out. The iPod sits so snuggly in the hat that you won’t worry about it falling out.
The hat is light and the iPod hardly adds any noticeable weight. Once the music player is on your head, you don’t really feel it, unlike armbands, which you’re always aware of. The Running Cap also includes a thin mesh section across its center to pull air through and cool your head.
The plastic covering that protects the Clickwheel can also make using the iPod a little tricky. Sometimes two or three touches can be needed to skip a song or raise or lower volume. This can be especially tricky since, with the iPod is at the back of your head, you can’t see the screen to change tracks. As a result, it’s best to use the hat either with a playlist or shuffling through the full library. This isn’t a big drawback, but it’s worth bearing in mind as part of your pre-exercise preparation.
The hat also doesn’t allow for the nano to be used in a case, exposing it to the elements or scratching.
These issues are minor, though. Overall, the iXoundWear Running Cap for iPod nano is a great addition to the iPod-owning exerciser’s gear. If you’ve got a runner in the family, makes sure they get a look at this hat.
