When downloading music, movies, or other content from the iTunes Store, you may occasionally find that your download is just about to finish (iTunes may even say "processing file," the last step before a file it added to your library) when you get an error message that says "An unknown error occurred (8248)." At this point, your download stops and the file isn't added to your library. If you paid for what you were downloading, you may be worried that you're out that money, but you're not. You just have to know how to fix error 8248.
Cause of the Error
This error is caused by a software conflict. Specifically, it's a conflict between either Verizon's V Cast Music with Rhapsody or Sprint Music Manager programs and iTunes. When those programs are running, a background program that you probably don't even know is there causes the problem. You need to quit one or both of these programs to fix the problem.
Systems Affected
- iTunes 7 and 8 on Windows
- Windows XP and Vista
Fixing iTunes Error 8248
In order to fix this error, you need to quit the background programs that are running and causing the conflict. Because they're background programs, you don't quit them the standard way. Instead, you'll need to use the Task Manager.
- Begin by opening the Windows Task Manager. Do this by holding down the Control, Alt, and Delete keys at the same time.
- On some versions of Windows, the Task Manager window will appear right away. On others, you may be shown a set of options. In that case, click on the Start Task Manager option.
- When the Task Manager is running, click the Processes tab.
- In that tab, look for a process called "Memonitor.exe."
- If you find it, single click it and then click the End Process button at the bottom right corner of the window to quit it.
- Some users also report needing to delete the temporary files created by the download in order to completely fix the problem. In that case, find your Music folder. In it, open the iTunes folder and then the iTunes Music folder inside it. There, you'll find a folder called Downloads. In that, locate the folders containing the songs you tried to download and delete the folders. Then restart iTunes and go to the iTunes Store and click the Check for Available Downloads option if it appears.
- If your download was a purchase that got interrupted (rather than a free download),or it doesn't appear in Check for Available Downloads, you may need to report the problem to iTunes support to get them to restart the download for you.
- If the download works, uninstall your current version of V Cast Music with Rhapsody or Sprint Music Manager (or both!) and download and install the newest version of the software.
If this doesn't solve the problem, contact iTunes support or your local Apple Store for more help.
