Defining Party Shuffle, a Feature of iTunes

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Party Shuffle - Party Shuffle is a controlled randomization feature offered by iTunes.

Party Shuffle, which is accessed by click in the Party Shuffle Playlist in the left menu in iTunes, lets users play random songs from their iTunes library. These songs can be drawn from the full library, or from particular playlists.

The process is not completely random, though, as users can choose to play higher rated songs more often, and delete songs from the upcoming list of songs to play. This is done by selecting the song in the Party Shuffle list and hitting the delete key. This does not delete the song from iTunes, just from the playlist.

Users can control the number of previously played songs displayed, as well as the number of upcoming songs. If a song is displayed in iTunes, it can be double clicked and played, even if it has already been played.

Party Shuffle was introduced in iTunes 4.5 in April 2004.
