Question: Can I Redownload Apps Purchased from the App Store?
Accidentally deleting an iPhone app, or losing your apps due to a hardware failure or theft, can be frustrating. After all, think of all the money invested in music, movies, and apps that are gone. While it's not possible to download new copies of music or movies you've purchased from the iTunes Store, is it possible to redownload apps purchased from the App Store?
Answer:

UPDATE, June 2011: With the release of iCloud, you can now redownload apps in a new way (this requires iTunes 10.3 or higher on the desktop and iOS 4.3 or higher on iOS devices). Learn the new iCloud-based process here.

Yes, it is possible to redownload apps from the App Store (as long as they're still available at the App Store, that is; apps that have been removed can't be downloaded again) regardless of whether the apps were free or purchased.

To redownload apps from iTunes:

  1. Sign into the iTunes account you used to buy/download the app.
  2. Find the app in the App Store and go through the standard purchase process again.
  3. You will be asked to purchase the app in the usual way. Don't worry--you won't be charged again. Click the "Buy" button.
  4. A window will pop up telling you you've already bought the app and asking whether you'd like to download it again for free. Click "OK" to download it.

To redownload apps from the iTunes Store app on the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad:

  1. Sign into the iTunes account you used to buy/download the app.
  2. Find the app in the App Store and go through the standard purchase process again.
  3. A window will pop up saying that you've already bought the app. To download it again for free, tap the "OK" button.
