What is a Hard Drive?

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Hard Drive - A hard drive is a device that is used to store data in computers, iPods, and other portable computing devices.

The hard drive is the place that data is generally stored for later use. It is made up of a series of plates that have data written onto them by a "head" when the user saves something to the hard drive.

Hard drives are the largest-capacity storage device available today, but can skip in portable devices like iPods because of their moving parts, and can break due to head error.
