Guide Review - Xtremsoft xPort Review
Developer
Xtremsoft
Version
4.86
Works With
No modern iPods, iPhones, or iPads
The bottom line says it all: stay away from xPort. At least version 4.86. It simply doesn't work with modern iPods and iOS devices. While it has never supported the iPod touch or iPhone (itself a problematic choice in a world where 150 million or so iOS devices have been sold), it doesn't support other recent models either.
The main culprit for this lack of support seems to be that the program hasn't been updated since Feb. 2009. That means it hasn't been updated for:
- 3rd generation iPod touch
- 4th generation iPod touch
- 5th generation iPod nano
- 6th generation iPod nano
- 3rd generation iPod Shuffle
- 4th generation iPod Shuffle
- All versions of iTunes 9
- All versions of iTunes 10
- iTunes 8.1 and up
- iPad
- iPhone 3GS
- iPhone 4
It's possible that xPort works fine with older iPods and older versions of iTunes. I simply have no way to test that. And given that iTunes is free, it stands to reason that most people have already upgraded to versions not supported by xPort. If that's not already true of iPods, too, it will be soon.
Until xPort is updated--it's been two years since the last update as of this writing (Feb. 2011); I'm not hopeful of that ever happening--stay far away. Even if an update does come, be wary. You don't want to be stuck waiting two years between updates in the future.
