The Bottom Line

Bigasoft iPod Transfer isn't an iPod transfer program in the same way as others I've tested. It's more about moving files from an iPod, with iTunes being one of a number of possible destinations. As a result, while it's a solid transfer program, it doesn't offer most of the advanced features its competitors do.

Pros

  • Very fast - moved 2.41GB in 4 minutes
  • Can copy one iPod to another

Cons

  • Doesn't move ratings, playcounts, iBooks files, photos, ringtones
  • No way to tell at a glance what needs to be transferred
  • Lacks other common features

Description

  • Software to transfer music from iPod to computer
  • Runs on Mac OS X (this review was done on the Mac) and Windows XP/Vista/7
  • Desktop software only, not an iPhone app
  • Price: US$24.95

Bare Bones

Bigasoft iPod Transfer is an interesting program. It's not so much a tool to transfer music from iPod to computer as it is a program that can transfer files from one place to another, which in this case happens to be from an iPod to a computer. It's certainly good at doing that, but in being less specific than other programs, it omits a lot of useful features.

While Bigasoft iPod Transfer can move music from an iPod, it's not able to move playcounts, star ratings, ringtones, iBooks files, photos, or other data (address book, calendar, etc.). That's a pretty long list of omissions. In its favor, it does move voice memos, podcasts, and video that's stored in the iTunes library on the device.

As a result of this bare bones approach, there's no easy way to see what songs are already in an iTunes library (though when you try to copy a song that's already present, it does offer a warning) and you have no know the location of your iTunes library folder in order to transfer directly to it.

Speedy

Since it's so bare bones, and doesn't transfer common elements of songs--ratings, playcounts--Bigasoft iPod Transfer is very fast. It moves 2.41 GB of data to iTunes in just 4 minutes. I'm not sure that the trade-off of features for speed is worth it, though.

Conclusions

Bigasoft iPod Transfer is very fast, but it doesn't offer much else. Essentially a gloried file-copying program, I'd look elsewhere both for more features and a better price for what's delivered.
