iPhone, iPad & iPod Video Format Support List

IPods and other Apple mobile devices support the following video formats for playback on the device's screen. Click on the link in the device name to learn how to identify that model.

H.264 video format

  • iPhone 4: up to 720p, 30 frames/second
  • iPhone 3GS & 3G: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480, 30 frames/second
  • iPhone: up to 1.5 Mbps at 640 x 480, 30 frames/second
  • iPad, all models: up to 720p, 30 frames/second
  • 4th gen. iPod touch: up to 720p, 30 frames/second
  • iPod touch, all other models: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480, 30 frames/second
  • iPod Classic, all models: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames/second
  • 5th gen. iPod: up to 768 Kbps at 320 x 240, 30 frames/second
  • iPod nano, 3rd/4th/5th gen.: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames/second

MPEG-4 video format

  • iPhone, all models: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames/second
  • iPhone 3GS, 3G and Original: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames/second
  • iPad, all models: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames/second
  • 4th gen. iPod touch, all models: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames/second
  • iPod touch, all other models: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480, 30 frames/second
  • iPod Classic, all models: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames/second
  • 5th gen. iPod: up to 2.5 Mbps at 480 x 480 pixels, 30 frames/second
  • iPod nano, 3rd/4th/5th gen.: up to 2.5 Mbps at 640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames/second

Motion JPEG video format

  • iPhone 4: up to 35 Mbps at 1280 x 720 pixels, 30 frames/second
  • iPad, all models: up to 35 Mbps at 1280 x 720 pixels, 30 frames/second
  • 4th gen. iPod touch: up to 35 Mbps at 1280 x 720 pixels, 30 frames/second

These devices support the following video formats for output to external monitors (often requires an adapter).

480p Resolution Output

  • iPhone, all models
  • iPod touch, all models
  • iPad, all models
  • iPod Classic
  • 5th gen. iPod
  • iPod nano: 3rd/4th/5th gen.

1024 x 768 Resolution Output

  • iPhone 4
  • iPad
  • 4th gen. iPod touch

1080p Resolution Output
