You can add email accounts to your iPhone (or iPod touch and iPad) in two ways: from the iPhone and from your desktop computer via sync. Here's how to do both.

Set Up Email on iPhone

To begin, make sure that you've already signed up for an email account somewhere (Yahoo, AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, etc). The iPhone doesn't allow you to sign up for an email account; it just allows you to add an existing account to your phone.

Once you've done that, if your iPhone doesn't have any email accounts set up on it yet, do the following:

  1. Tap the Mail app in the bottom row of icons on your home screen
  2. You'll be presented with a list of common types of email accounts: Exchange, Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, etc. Tap on the kind of email account you want to set up
  3. On the next screen, you'll need to enter your name, the email address you set up previously, the password you created for your email account, and a description of the account. Then tap the Next button in the top right corner
  4. The iPhone automatically checks your email account to ensure you've entered the correct information. If so, checkmarks appear next to each item and you'll be taken to the next screen. If not, it will indicate where you need to correct information
  5. You can also sync calendars and notes. Move the sliders to On if you want to sync them, though it's not necessary. Tap the Next button
  6. You'll then be taken to your email inbox, where messages will immediately download from your account to your phone.

If you've already set up at least one email account on your phone and want to add another, do the following:

  1. Tap the Settings app on your home screen
  2. Scroll down to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars item and tap it
  3. You'll see a list of the accounts already set up on your phone. At the bottom of the list, tap the Add Account item
  4. From there, follow the process for adding a new account detailed above.

Set Up Email on Desktop

If you've already got email accounts set up on your computer, there's a simple way to add them to your iPhone.

  1. Begin by syncing your iPhone to your computer
  2. In the row of tabs across the top, the first option is Info. Click on it
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and you'll see a box that displays all the email accounts you've got set up on your computer
  4. Check the box next to the account or accounts you want to add to your iPhone
  5. Click the Apply or Sync button in the bottom right corner of the screen to confirm the changes and add the accounts you selected to your iPhone.
  6. When the sync process is completed, eject your phone and the accounts will be on your phone, ready for use.

Edit Email Signature

By default, all emails sent from your iPhone include "Sent from my iPhone" as a signature at the end of each message. But you can change that.

  1. Tap the Settings app on your home screen
  2. Scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars and tap it
  3. Scroll down to the Mail section. There are two boxes there. In the second one, there's an item called Signature. Tap that
  4. This shows your current signature. Edit the text there to change it
  5. There's no need to save the change. Just tap the Mail button in top left corner to save your changes.
