Mark Email as Unread

Marking emails as read, unread, or flagging them for later attention is one of the best ways to manage the email inbox on your iPhone or iPod touch. And managing your inbox these days is tough: most of us get at least dozens of emails a day, with some people getting hundreds. In that situation, you've got to have a quick way to handle your mail. Here are the options that the Mail app that comes with the iOS offers.

Mark as Read

On some early versions of the iOS, there was no way to mark emails as read without actually reading them. Luckily, all's that changed with more modern versions of the OS. If you're running iOS 7 or higher, all you need to do to mark an email read is:

  1. In your inbox, tap Edit
  2. Tap each email you want to mark as read. A checkmark will appear to show that you've selected that message.
  3. Tap Mark in the bottom left corner
  4. In the pop-up menu, tap Mark as Read.

If you're running an old version of the iOS that doesn't support Mark as Read, you still have some options:

Via Jailbreak
If your phone is jailbroken, there are a few apps available through Cydia that (and you may have guessed what's coming next) allow you to mark messages as read. They include:

But, as always, remember that jailbreaking can be dicey and you're on your own if you do it.

Via IMAP
If any of your email accounts are checked using the IMAP protocol (Gmail is the account that most people have that can use IMAP), any message you read on a desktop or web email program will be automatically marked on the iPhone as read. That's because IMAP syncs messages and message status across all devices those accounts are configured on.

To use IMAP, you'll need to make some changes to your desktop email program (and, perhaps, your webmail account). The About.com Guide to Email has the rundown on how to turn IMAP on and configure your email programs to use it.

Mark as Unread

If you read an email and then decide you want to mark it as unread (for instance, as a reminder that it's important and you need to come back to it), follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Mail app and find the message you want to mark as unread
  2. Tap the Edit button
  3. Tap each email you want to mark as unread. A checkmark will appear to show that you've selected that message.
  4. Tap Mark in the bottom left corner
  5. In the pop-up menu, tap Mark as Unread.

Flag Messages

The Mail app also lets you flag messages. Many people use flag as a way to remind themselves that that message is important or requires them to take some action soon. Flagging messages is very similar to marking them:

  1. Go to the Mail app and find the message you want to mark as unread
  2. Tap the Edit button
  3. Tap each email you want to mark as unread. A checkmark will appear to show that you've selected that message.
  4. Tap Mark in the bottom left corner
  5. In the pop-up menu, tap Flag. In iOS 7 or higher, flagged messages are marked with an orange dot. In iOS 6 and earlier, a small flag icon appears next to them.

To see a list of all of your flagged emails, tap the Mailboxes button to move back to your list of email inboxes. On the screen, tap Flagged. You can unflag messages by following these steps and tapping Unflag.
