TextFree Unlimited app

Pinger, Inc.

The Good

  • Pick your own area code for free
  • Unlimited texting
  • Supports push notifications

The Bad

Download at iTunes

If you have an iPod touch and want to send text messages, an app like TextFree Unlimited (Free) is just what you need. This free app lets you send unlimited text messages without a phone. Depending on your AT&T contract, even iPhone users can benefit from this texting app.

Pick your own area code

TextFree Unlimited works much like another texting app I tested recently, TextPlus, but there are a few important differences. Most notably, if you want to choose your own area code and phone number, TextPlus charges US$1.99. With TextFree Unlimited, you don’t have to pay extra to get the area code you want. Once you enter your area code, the app gives you a choice between several phone numbers. That’s a big benefit to TextFree Unlimited. While I was testing TextPlus, several friends asked why my texts were coming from a different area code than normal. TextFree Unlimited can help reduce that confusion.

Like TextPlus, you’ll need to set up a free account, which takes about two seconds. Sending and receiving texts is simple, and the TextFree Unlimited app is very easy to navigate. TextFree also supports push notifications, so you’ll receive an automatic notification when you get a new text -- even if the app isn’t open. The only downside is that TextFree Unlimited doesn’t have a group texting option like TextPlus. If that feature is important to you, TextPlus is probably a better bet.

When you compose a text, the words “Sent from TextFree” are added automatically at the end of your message. However, you can manually delete those words if you want or change the signature in the settings menu. Be sure to check out the settings menu because you can change your texting tones or even turn off the in-app advertisements (for a cool US$5.99 per year).

The Bottom Line

I love this app! TextFree Unlimited is incredibly easy to use, and it provides unlimited free texting. Most of all, I love that you don’t have to pay extra to pick your own area code. On the flip side, TextFree Unlimited doesn’t support group texting, but I still think it’s a great download. Overall rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.

What You’ll Need

The TextFree Unlimited app is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.

Do NOT register your actual cell number, Member vle045

This was a great texting app... Until I registered my cell number. It sounded like it was going to forward text messages to the app, so that I could get messages on my phone and iPod. I was very mistaken. Once I registered my number, it grabbed my text messages and never displayed them anywhere. It took me a while to realize that I was not getting text messages, after a few people told me, ""but I sent you a text!!!"" I started with my carrier.... Nothing was wrong with the phone or service. Then I remembered the texting app (which was only on my iPod). I could not unregister my number myself, deleting the app did not help. I eventually thought to email Pinger and they removed it from their database. Finally, I was getting text messages on my phone again!!! I was too nervous to put the app back and switched to TextNow. Sure, the number is not local, but who needs a local number for texting??
