Creating and sharing photos
When you first log into the app, Instagram displays photos from other users in a grid format. I’m continually surprised by the quality of photos taken with the iPhone, so I love the chance to drool over pictures that are much better than anything I could produce. You’ll need to sign up for a free account to get the most out of Instagram. After creating a username and password, you can import friends and contacts from the iPhone address book, Facebook, and Twitter.
To get started perfecting and sharing your photos, take a picture with the iPhone camera or choose one from the camera roll. Using the app, you can scale or readjust the photo before applying filters. Instagram includes 15 filters that apply different effects or color tones. I have so much fun playing around with the filters, and it really is amazing how they can make the most boring photos look pretty cool. The filters are great, but Instagram doesn’t have as many editing features as other iPhone photography apps. I especially missed a crop tool, as well as tools like lighten/darken and contrast.
Once you have finished crafting your photo, you can share it on various social networking and photography sites, including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Tumblr, Posterous, and Foursquare. You can also email photos as well. Your photo is then added to your feed, where friends can comment on it or ‘like’ it. The Instagram feed also includes photos from your friends, so it really combines the feel of both a photography and social networking app.
The Bottom Line
Instagram is a great photography app, and I love the numerous social networking features. It’s also a great resource for creative inspiration. The lack of basic editing features is the only drawback that keeps this from being a five-star app. Overall rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.
