The Good
- Easy-to-use interface
- Multiple shopping lists
The Bad
- Too few features for the price
GroceryList (US$4.99) does a good job of organizing your shopping lists, but there are few extra features in this pricey app. Can its easy-to-use interface overcome a lack of common features?

Unlimited shopping lists
GroceryList supports unlimited shopping lists, so you can create new sections for groceries, pharmacy items, home improvement projects, etc. The app is easy to use, and although the interface is not the nicest I’ve seen, it is simple to add new items to any of your shopping lists. Simply type the item name in the search bar, and GroceryList will auto-fill with suggestions.
Some brand names are included, but I found it easier to search for a general item name instead. For example, oatmeal is included in the database, but Quaker Oats is not. You can add items manually if they aren’t listed in the database. Once you are done adding items, GroceryList sorts each item into their appropriate aisles. Unlike some grocery apps I’ve tried, GroceryList actually categorizes everything correctly, which is always a good thing!
After you tap the checkmark next to each grocery purchase, that item is automatically moved to the bottom of your list, so you only see the outstanding items left on your list.
Given the price of the GroceryList app, I was surprised that it doesn’t have more features. Other than the list functionality, there is really little here. Unlike other grocery apps, there is no barcode scanner, in-app coupons or store flyers, or social networking integration. You can’t sync your shopping list with other family members or even email it to them.
The Bottom Line
GroceryList does a perfectly good job of organizing your shopping lists, but there are a number of cheaper grocery apps that have more features. Grocery IQ (Free) includes a barcode scanner, in-app coupons, and a website for editing your lists online. Shopper (US$0.99) includes those features plus the ability to share your lists in a variety of ways. I would check out these apps before GroceryList. Overall rating: 3 stars out of 5.
What You’ll Need
The GroceryList app is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.
