Green Grocer iPhone app

The Good

  • Unlimited shopping lists
  • Search with auto-fill
  • Share lists via email

The Bad

  • Better value elsewhere

Purchase at iTunes

Green Grocer (US$4.99) is one of many grocery apps that you can use to organize multiple shopping lists. It does a good job on the basics, but you can get better value from a number of lower-priced apps.

Our top picks are reviewed in this list of the best iPhone grocery list apps.

Unlimited shopping lists

As with most grocery list apps, Green Grocer supports multiple shopping lists. Adding new items to your list is easy -- just tap the + icon in the upper right-hand corner. The app has a handy auto-fill feature, so suggestions are displayed underneath as soon as you start typing.

While I like having an auto-fill on the search field, the app’s database is not as extensive as some of its competitors. Green Grocer includes all the basics, but no brand names are listed. The app does make it very easy to add items manually -- just finish typing and tap ‘done.’ You can also specify item quantities or other details in the notes field, which is displayed underneath the item name on the main list page.

Once you check items off your list, you can shake your iPhone to move those items to the bottom of the list. That is a cute feature, but it seems that the app could just move those items automatically.

You can share your shopping list via email, but Green Grocer includes few other features. This is the same issue I have with the Grocery List app. Given the price, I would expect to see a little more functionality, including a barcode scanner or the ability to edit your shopping list online. Other apps also include in-app coupons or store flyers, push notifications, or the ability to sync your list with other users.

The Bottom Line

Green Grocer is perfectly suitable for creating and editing shopping lists, but you can get better value with other grocery list apps. In particular, Grocery IQ and Shopper offer far more features for much less. So while Green Grocer does a good job of providing basic functionality, I can’t give it a wholehearted recommendation. Overall rating: 3 stars out of 5.

What You’ll Need

The Green Grocer app is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.
