It is New Year’s Resolution time again, and for many Americans that means starting a new diet in hopes of losing weight this year. Getting started is hard, and the sheer number of diet plans can be completely overwhelming. The Diet2Go app is one option for evaluating different diets, as it includes meal plans for a number of weight loss programs.
Diet2Go isn’t the most beautiful app around, but the interface is easy to use. Setting up your profile only takes a few seconds, and then you can browse a list of diet plans or search by category. Diet2Go includes all different types of diets, including vegetarian, low-carb, blood type, and more. However, the app is missing popular diet plans like Atkins and South Beach -- probably because of copyright issues. Diet2Go does include plenty of low-carb plans with generic names like "Easy Low Carb" and "Super Protein" but they’re not the brand names you may be expecting.
Hard-to-understand ratings
Each diet gets a rating that tells you a little about that plan’s credibility. Some diets are labeled as fads, so you know to avoid them altogether. The app doesn’t specify who assigns the ratings (is it a doctor or health professional?), and few diets get less than a four-star rating -- even the Grapefruit Diet scores that highly -- so you have to take the ratings with a grain of salt.
All of the diets include five days worth of meal plans. Once you find a diet that looks interesting, you can schedule your eating times and all of the meals will be added to the in-app calendar. You can also add all the items that you’ll need for the meal plans to a shopping list. Facebook and Twitter integration are additional benefits if you want to announce to the world that you’re on a diet.
The Bottom Line
Diet2Go isn’t a comprehensive weight loss plan, but it does give you enough information to get started. Although it lacks many popular diets, Diet2Go has a good number of plans in a variety of different categories. The five days of meal plans won’t last very long, but this free app can give you a sense of which diet may meet your needs before you shell out for a book or website subscription. Overall rating: 3 stars out of 5.
What You’ll Need
The Diet2Go app is compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad; it requires iPhone OS 3.0 or later.
