Weight Watchers is one of the most popular weight loss plans, with its easy-to-use system of tracking points instead of counting calories. The Weight Watchers Mobile app (Free) is designed to make it easier to keep track of your points, but how does this weight loss app fare in real life?
Great for subscribers... not so much for everyone else
The Weight Watchers diet is designed around the concept of tracking points -- every food or meal is assigned a certain points value, and the goal is to stay within your points quota for the day. To get the most out of the Weight Watchers app, you’ll need a subscription to Weight Watchers Online. This costs US$17.95 per month (plus a $29.95 start-up fee), so it’s not exactly cheap. You can’t sign up for a new account from the app, so you’ll have to do that first at WeightWatchers.com.
Once you have a subscription, however, you’ll have access to the app’s many features. You can search the database of more than 30,000 foods to track and calculate your daily points, or add your own recipes and meals to calculate their points value. A weight log with an interactive chart will help you see how your weight changes over time. I also like that the app prominently displays how many points you have remaining for the day, which makes it easy to budget your food intake.
If you don’t have an account with Weight Watchers Online, you won’t have access to the weight loss tools, but you can still access the daily recipes, view success stories, and locate a Weight Watchers meeting near you. That’s nice, but there is little value to the Weight Watchers Mobile app unless you are willing to purchase a subscription.
Cheat sheets and recipes
The recipes do look great, however, and the points values are already calculated for each one. My only complaint -- something you’ll find in a lot of recipe apps -- is that the ingredients and instructions are listed on separate pages, so you’ll have to go back and forth when following the recipe.
The Weight Watchers Mobile app also includes a shopping list, which you can email to yourself to print off later. The "Cheat Sheets" are pretty neat too, including a graphic that calculates the points value of a pizza based on what toppings you add. Overall, the interface is very well done, and the Weight Watchers app is easy to use and navigate.
The Bottom Line
If you already have a subscription to Weight Watchers Online, the free app is a no-brainer. It will give you mobile access to your account and allow you to track points on the go. However, the app isn’t very useful from a weight loss standpoint for those who don’t already subscribe, and not everyone can afford to spend nearly $18 a month in this economy. Overall rating: 3.5 stars out of 5.
