If I Upgrade to an iPhone 3G, How Long is My Contract?

By , About.com Guide

Question: If I Upgrade to an iPhone 3G, How Long is My Contract?
Answer:

If you’re the owner of a first-generation iPhone, you're immediately eligible to upgrade to the iPhone 3G at the subsidized price, though you'll pay an $18 upgrade fee.

If you have the earlier iPhone, you signed a two-year contract with AT&T when you bought the phone. If you want to upgrade to the iPhone 3G, AT&T will overwrite your existing contract with a new two-year agreement.

In practice, this should mean that it you had one year left on your and buy an iPhone 3G, your contract will be just two years, not three.

The upgraded contract will be AT&T's new, more expensive 3G data rate.
