The Apple TV comes standard with the palm-sized white remote control that's become a common element of the Apple ecosystem in recent years. But, the remote that comes with your Apple TV isn't the only remote that can control the device.
The Apple TV remote is the same kind of remote that ships with MacBooks and iMacs, so if you've got a remote from one, it will control all of them. This can be a relief if you had more than one remote but find that you've lost one. No need to buy a new one since they're all the same remote.
Remote App
In the same way that iTunes libraries can be controlled by iPhones and iPod touches running the Remote application, the Apple TV can be controlled using Remote as well.
Just as with iTunes, you'll need an iPhone or iPod touch running iPhone OS 2.0 or higher, the Remote app, and to be on the same WiFi network as your Apple TV. With all those conditions met, simply pair your mobile device with the Apple TV in the standard way and you'll have another remote.
Other Remote Applications
The App Store offers a handful of remote applications that can control the Apple TV. Try a search for "Apple TV remote" at the App Store to get the most up-to-date listing. You'll find apps of all types and quality, generally priced at a few dollars.
These apps will generally also control other devices, too, so if you've got a lot of gadgets in the house, they might be a god way to consolidate control in a single device.
