Buy Songs from eMusic

By Sam Costello, About.com

eMusic.com is the leading music download service behind Apple's iTunes Music Store. This how-to guide will explain how to sign up for eMusic, find music, download from it, and add eMusic songs to iTunes for use with your iPod.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 15 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Start by going to emusic.com and choose "start your free trial".

Starting with your free trial will sign you up for free MP3 downloads and to continue the service after your free trial ends. (You can always cancel your membership after your trial ends, if you like.)

  2. Enter your account and payment information, and choose your membership plan, depending on how many songs you want to download each month and how much you want to pay.

Whereas the iTunes Music Store charges you for each song you download, with eMusic you pay a flat fee each month to download a fixed number of songs.

  3. Enter your music preferences and then download the eMusic download manager that works with your computer (choose the Mac or PC version, depending on what computer you have).

  4. Install the eMusic download manager software.

  5. Back in your web browser at eMusic.com, you should see a search bar at the top right of the screen.

Enter the name of the artist, song, or CD you want to find and hit "search". But remember - eMusic only has artists on independent labels, so you may not find everything that you would at iTunes.

  6. You'll then be given a set of search results, showing the matches for your search listed by Artist, Album, or Song. Select the match that is what you're looking for.

  7. You'll see a page listing the album and songs you chose. You have three options here:

    • Preview the song. To do this, click the speaker icon on the left and you'll get a 30-second preview.
    • Download the song. If you only want to download the song, and not the whole album, click the down arrow icon to the right of the song.
    • Download the album. If you want to download the whole album at once, click the "download ALL" button at the bottom of the box.
  8. The song or songs you downloaded will be added to a folder called "My eMusic." This folder should be on your desktop.

  9. To add these songs to your iTunes library, open iTunes.

Then open the My eMusic folder and select all the songs you want to add. Drag them into the open iTunes window. This will add them automatically.

  10. If you browse your iTunes library, you'll find that your new songs are listed.

  11. The next time you sync your iPod with your computer, your new songs will be added!
