It may never have occurred to you that your need a combination iPod shuffle case, keychain, and bottle opener. It did, however, occur to Jared Fiorovich, a 17-year-old skateboarder (not legal drinking age, dude!) who attended the 2007 Macworld Expo and visited the Mophie booth. At the booth, Fiorovich sketched the idea for this case and, seeing something they loved, Mophie took him up on his idea. Thus was born the Bevy.

The Bevy packs a lot of functionality into a small shape. The case itself is a small hard polycarbonate rectangle with a bottle-cap-shaped opening on the front and an iPod shuffle-shaped opening on the back. Inside the case is a small metal insert good for popping off bottle tops and the side features a metal ring for your keys.

When I first heard of the Bevy, I thought it was novel and interesting, but kind of silly. And, having used it a bit, I suppose my opinion hasn’t changed. But I’m also more fond of the Bevy than I thought I’d be. It’s a good idea and it makes toting your iPod shuffle with you easy — especially because it lets you wrap Apple’s included iPod earbuds around the case.

But, you know, who cares if it’s silly? It’s fun. It’s easy to pop the iPod shuffle in and out of the Bevy — and easy to pop the top off a bottle, too. The one downside is that in order to open a bottle, you need to remove the iPod from the case.

With its combination of iPod case and two useful things that many people carry with them everywhere — keychain and bottle opener — I suspect that the Bevy could become a hit with high school and college students and people just out of college.

It might also make a great small gift for the holidays or birthdays.

Oh, and in case you were wondering about what happened to its inventor, Jared Fiorovich, Mophie rewarded him with money, iPod shuffles, a case of Bevys, and his name on the packaging. Not bad for a quick doodle.
