How to Forward iPhone Text Messages

Forward iPhone Text Message

Ever get a text message that you just have to share? If the person you want to share it with is nearby, that's as easy as simply handing them your phone or reading the message to them. But what if they're not nearby? Then you can send the message to them as a text by forwarding it.

Messages, the text messaging app built into the iOS, has the ability to forward texts. Depending on what version of the OS you're running, though, it can be a little hard to know how to do it. Here's what you need to know.

Forwarding Texts in iOS 7

In the iOS 7 version of Messages, there's no button to forward texts; instead, the feature is hidden. To forward a text:

  1. Tap Messages to open it.
  2. Go to the text conversation that includes the message you want to forward.
  3. Find the message you want to forward. Tap and hold on it.
  4. When the pop-up menu appears, tap More.
  5. The message you selected will have a blue checkmark next to it. This means it is selected and ready to be forwarded. You can also tap other messages in that conversation to forward.
  6. Tap the Share button (the curving arrow at the bottom).
  7. A new texting screen appears with the message you're forwarding in the area where you write the text. Type in the name or phone number of the person you want to forward the message to, or tap the + to browse your contacts, as you would a normal message.
  8. Tap Send. The message has now been forwarded to a new person.

Using iOS 6 or Earlier

Because the interface of iOS 6 and earlier is so different from iOS 7, a number of the steps for forwarding texts are different, too. Here's what you need to do:

  1. Tap Messages to open it.
  2. Go to the text conversation that includes the message you want to forward.
  3. Tap Edit.
  4. An empty circle will appear next to each message in the conversation. Tap the message (or messages) you want to forward. A checkmark will appear next to it.
  5. Tap Forward.
  6. Type in the name or phone number of the person you want to forward the message to, or tap the + to browse your contacts, as you would a normal message.
  7. You'll see the text message you want to forward and the name of the person you're sending it to. Make any edits you want.
  8. Tap Send.

Forwarding to Multiple Recipients

You can also forward texts to multiple recipients. Follow the steps above for the version of the operating system you're using, except in the step where you choose who to forward the message to, enter multiple names or phone numbers.

Forwarding Photos and Videos

You're not limited to forwarding text; if someone texts you a photo or video, you can forward that, too. Follow all the same steps as listed above and simply select the photo or video instead of a message.
