I’ve never been too much interested in playing games on my cell phones. The screens are too small, the controls too limited, and usually carriers want me to pay for the games. I’m just not interested enough, nor would I use them enough, to bother paying for a cell phone game.
Lots of people like to play games on their phones, though. However, because users can’t install software on their iPhones, that makes the games options very limited: users can only play games that are web-based and can be accessed through the Safari web browser.
There have been rumors that games are coming to the iPhone — much like they’ve come to the iPod — but nothing has been announced yet.
So, in the meantime, here are a few web-based games that I’ve found that you might enjoy:
- Tilt - A great demo game that uses the iPhone’s ability to change screen orientation as part of the fun
- Solitaire – The classic computer time waster - Update 4/2009: Looks like this one is gone
- Video Poker – A casino on your phone - Update 4/2009: Looks like this one is gone, too
- Blackjack - Ditto
When Flash and Java support are added to the iPhone, we can expect more, and more sophisticated games on the web. Even more sophistication should be offered by games that can be installed on the iPhone. For the time being, though, hopefully these will keep you occupied.
