I’m starting to wonder if the iPhone is too big. I’m not necessarily a big devotee of miniaturization. I don’t need the smallest gadgets. But I like being able to slip my old phone — a Motorola RAZR — into my pocket and still have room for my keys or wallet or something else. With the iPhone, there’s not much extra room in my pockets.
My RAZR is roughly the size of the iPhone’s screen alone. When considered as a mobile media player, I’m glad the iPhone is the size it is. Its screen is big and pretty and makes watching movies or TV shows, as well as looking at album art, a joy. Watching TV on a fifth-generation iPod can be a bit of a chore and requires a bit of squinting. Not so on the iPhone.
But as a phone? Perhaps it’s a little too big. My RAZR usually goes into a front pocket. Because of its size, though, the iPhone goes in my back pocket, which makes me nervous. Backpockets are a great place to put things you want to sit on and break or get stolen by a pickpocket.
I haven’t brought my iPhone out of the house for a few days. I’m not sure if that’s because I haven’t still distributed my new number to all my friends and business contacts so they call my RAZR or if it’s because it’s bigger than I’d like.
The web is abuzz with rumors of an “iPhone nano,” a smaller-screened iPhone that would be the younger sibling to the iPhone that the iPod nano is to the full-sized iPod. Though they’re just rumors now, I’d certainly be interested in an iPhone nano if the rumors become reality.
I’m not sure how much video I’m eve going to watch on my phone, but I know I’ll store it in my pockets a lot. And I’d like to have a phone that doesn’t take up so much space.
