Best New App Finalists

The 2013 Readers' Choice Awards on About.com

Every year, tens of thousands of new apps are released into the App Store. Many are very good, but a select group from among them are the best of the best and make a huge splash. Some of them become the kind of app that everyone needs to have on their device. Vote here for the best apps that made their debut in 2012.

Call Bliss
Price: $2.99
Call Bliss takes iOS 6's Do Not Disturb feature and makes it more nuanced and more powerful. Instead of the blanket call/no call settings of Do Not Disturb, with Call Bliss, you can create groups of contacts and choose who can call you based on both when it is and where you are (for instance, no personal calls at work). Blackout Mode prevents all contact, while Open Door Mode lets anyone get in touch. Call Bliss needs iOS 6 to work, but if Do Not Disturb is too crude for your taste, Call Bliss might solve your problem.

Clear
Price: $1.99
Clear is the brightly colored to-do list that (rightly) got a lot of attention when it debuted. That attention was largely due to Clear's innovative interface, which used the multitouch screen of iOS devices to great effect. Instead of tapping + to create new entries or a back button to move up a level in your lists, swipes, pinches, drags, and other gestures handle everything. Clear isn't just a marvel of interface design, it's also key to helping many people get all their tasks done.

Google Maps
Price: Free
When iOS 6 debuted, Apple got a lot of negative attention for the problems with its in-house Maps app that replaced the Google Maps-powered app. Though it took a little while, Google eventually released its own standalone Maps app. Google Maps offers a number of features Apple Maps doesn't, including mass transit and walking directions and integration with other Google services. For those who found Apple Maps too unreliable, Google Maps is a lifesaver.

Fantastical
Price: $4.99
A smarter, more efficient replacement for Apple's built-in Calendar app on iOS. Fantastical lets you create calendar events using natural language. Just type in, "haircut at 3 tomorrow" and it will create an event on the right day at the right time without you doing anything else. Fantastical supports repeating events, alerts, and all the other features you expect from a calendar app, while also providing an attractive, swipable interface. With it, keeping track of your calendar is a snap.

Rojo Word
Price: $0.99
The only game in this category, Rojo Word shares the letters-on-a-tray element of Scrabble but, instead of asking players to make a crossword, asks them to make as many words as possible from their letters within a short time. You can play on your own or challenge up to 4 of your friends in head-to-head mode. Keep an eye out for the red vowel--it doubles the score of the word you play it in.
