This installment in Oceanhouse Media's series of Dr. Seuss apps helps kids learn about cetaceans--whales, dolphins, and porpoises. The Cat in the Hat guides kids through learning via interactive elements, glossary terms, quizzes, and more. Whether using the guided narration feature or progressing through the app on their own, kids ages 5-10 will learn about creatures of sea in fun ways.

Splash Math
Price: Free or $9.99
Splash Math is a series of educational apps for 1st-5th graders that puts learning math under the sea. Topics covered include everything from basics like addition and subtraction, time and money, and fractions and decimals. Each lesson starts on easy level and, as your child progresses, the difficulty increases. Download the free version, which offers 20 questions per day, to get started and then buy individual chapters for $2.99 or the entire 13-chapter set for $9.99.

TeachMe: Kindergarten
Price: $1.99
Kindergarten-aged kids learn four key concepts with this app: sight words, addition, subtraction, and spelling. Parents guide kids through the app by choosing difficulty levels and track how their kids are doing. Every three correct answers rewards kids with a coin; coins can then be traded for up to 100 different stickers or items in a virtual aquarium. The app can track up the progress of up to 4 different children.

Write it Versus: The Pen is Mightier than the Sword
Price: $2.99
In Write it Versus, players are challenged to create stories using built-in elements, such as words, characters, and titles. Quick and creative stories are rewarded with rankings and trophies. The completed stories can be printed or shared via Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook. Multiple game modes, including a hot-seat option, make for lots of replayability and fun.

Word Dog
Price: $0.99
Pre-K level students learn to spell with the help of a virtual dog in Word Dog (versions with cats and pigs are also available). Kids learn to spell 3-letter words and are rewarded for their success with virtual stickers for every 5 words spelled correctly. Because the app doesn't include social networking, location data, and external links, parents can feel safe letting their young children use the app.
