Best Ringtone App Finalists

The 2012 Readers' Choice Awards on About.com

The winners have been announced. Find out who won here.

AutoRingtone Pro
Developer: No Tie LLC
Price: $.099
Most ringtone apps use music--whether based on songs in your iPhone's music library or more generic tunes--to help you customize the sound that alerts you to a phone call. Not AutoRingtone. Instead, it uses text-to-speech technology to have your phone speak to you when someone calls and tell you who's calling. Hear your ringtones in all kinds of voices, from people with Australian or British accents to cowboys to Jersey girls to robots.

Ringtone Designer Pro
Developer: Blackout Labs
Price: $0.99
Ringtone Designer Pro lets you take any song on your iPhone, chop it into a 40-second segment, and turn it into a ringtone. Now your favorite songs can play when your phone rings, or song that means something to you and the caller can let you know when someone important is trying to reach you. The app also lets you create alert and text tones from your music. Your purchase nets you some free ring and text tones, too.

Ringtone DJ
Developer: AppAnnex LLC
Price: Free
Create ringtones or text tones, and add DJ-style effects to them, with this app. As with other ringtone apps, you start with songs from your music library and then find a section of them to turn into a ringtone. That's where other apps end, but not Ringtone DJ. Instead, if you've upgraded through $1.99 in-app purchase to add features, you can tweak the tone with record scratches, pitch changes, filters, and recording your own voice.

Ringtones Uncensored Pro
Developer: No Tie LLC
Price: $.099
Ringtones Uncensored Pro is similar to, and made by the same developer as, AutoRingtone. But where AutoRingtone is primarily used for letting you know who is calling by having your phone speak a name, Ringtones Uncensored Pro let your ringtones say anything--from nicknames to attention-getting phrases to decidedly not PG-rated phrases. This app can also be used to create alert tones that play when other events occur on your iPhone.

Ringtone Wizard Pro
Developer: Rocha Software Ltd.
Price: $0.99
Create ringtones of 6-40 seconds in length using your own music with Ringtone Wizard Pro. In addition to just snagging pieces of songs to use as ringtones, this app lets you adjust their volume, create alarm tones for use with the iPhone's clock app, and more. The editor interface of this app makes it easy to have precise control over the start and stop points of your ringtones, making them sound more professional.
