- A few hints of what's coming down the pike for core Apple apps popped up this week. Not hard to believe, but Apple is hiring new developers for its Maps team. The company is also looking to turn Siri into "an OS within an OS" and potentially bring it to the Mac. Lastly, remember the long-rumored Apple streaming radio service that would compete with Pandora? This week's jailbreak of iOS 6 uncovered some icons that may be related to it.
- Apple is now the #1 mobile phone company in the U.S. Not largest smartphone vendor. All mobile phones. That means Apple sells more iPhones than companies offering free and $10 and $50 and $100 phones in addition to their high-end models.
- What is going on with Path? The company paid an US$800,000 fine to the government this week due to its unauthorized collection of information from children (you'll remember Path was sucking up data from user's devices without their consent). But then, on the same day (I'm not kidding), the app was discovered to be geo-tagging users' photos without their permission--and even when the user has disabled Location Services to prevent this. The app has since been updated to remove that, but with this pattern of behavior how could you trust this company?
- In content news, there's a possibility that HBO shows will be available on the Apple TV this year (if so, make it something I can subscribe to directly without subscribing to HBO via my cable company, please) and the iTunes Store recently sold its 25 billionth song.
