iPod Minis: New iPhone Rumors, T-Mobile, App Store

By January 10, 2013

Follow me on:

  • The iPhone 5 may have debuted less than 6 months ago, but the rumor mill is already looking towards the next model--or, as one rumor has it, models. One analyst expects that the next iPhone will come in more colors than just the traditional black and white, along the lines of the 5th gen. iPod touch. Perhaps, though that seems like one of the least important changes Apple might make.
  • A bigger change could come in the form of a new, low-cost iPhone aimed at the lower end of the market and developing countries. This one doesn't completely add up, in that Apple already offers the iPhone 4 for free and the 4S for $99, but it's not crazy. Still, John Gruber is skeptical.
  • In iPhone carrier news, Walmart will start selling the iPhone 4 and 5 on Straight Talk's $45/month unlimited plans on Jan. 11. The phones are close to full price, though, which may deter some customers. Despite not being an official iPhone carrier until later this year, T-Mobile says it has over 2 million iPhones running on its network and activates over 100,000 iPhones a month.
  • In a measure of its success, Apple recently announced that there have now been over 40 billion downloads from the App Store. And almost half of those downloads came in 2012 alone. That's a heck of a graph.
