- A justified kerfuffle was kicked up last week when it was discovered that the popular social app Path was uploading iOS users' address books to its servers without permission or notification to attempt to help its users contact other people. Needless to say, people were not happy.
- Congress asked some questions, Path apologized and vowed to change course, Apple promised to make address book sharing optional in future iOS versions, and--believe it or not--jailbroken apps were found by one study to transfer less user data than officially sanctioned apps. That's a lot of action for less than 10 days!
- In ongoing patent news:
- Apple has expanded its suit in the U.S. against Samsung to include more patents and products.
- Apple has also asked a bankruptcy court judge to allow it sue Kodak for patent infringement.
- A study by the Fair Labor Association has found that the conditions at the Chinese contractor Apple uses for its manufacturing are "way, way above average." This study comes after the widely reported problems at the Foxconn plant, including worker suicides in 2011.
- Here's a fun hypothetical: what if the Dow had added Apple in 2009 when it had the chance? Then the Dow would be at nearly 15,000. It closed yesterday at 12,780.
