The long-awaited turn-by-turn GPS app from Tom Tom has hit the App Store. It's available in the U.S. for $99, with varying prices at the international App Stores. The mounting kit that will accompany the app has not yet seen the light of day (though one has to expect it will soon).
It will be interesting to see how this app is received and how well it works given some of the iPhone's limitations. For instance, the iPhone can only run one app at a time, so running the Tom Tom app means no music and no phone. This could complicate car rides a lot. I'm very interested in the app, but my iPhone is what I use to listen to music while driving and I often make calls while on the road. Having to choose between those functions and getting where I'm going isn't much of a choice at all.
While Tom Tom no doubt has made a good app, it could be hamstrung by those limitations - and for the first time really point out one of the iPhone's weaknesses. It will be interesting to see how Apple (and Tom Tom) handle this.
