I'm Considering Going Caseless

Wednesday November 19, 2008

One thing that I tell anyone who asks is - and I always write this as well - if you've got an iPhone, get a case for it. You're going to drop it at some point, no matter how careful you are, and a case will keep it from getting too damaged.

And yet, after a few weeks of testing iPhone 3G cases, I'm considering going caseless.

Potentially dangerous, yes, but maybe also rewarding. The issue is this: every iPhone 3G case I've tested makes the phone thicker, less sleek, less appealing. One of the things that makes the iPhone 3G such a pleasure is its ergonomics - the tapered sides and light weight make it a simple joy to hold in your hand. It just feels good there, natural. With a case wrapped around it, the phone just doesn't feel as good. It feels bulky, less smooth and sleek, chunkier.

This weekend, I removed my iPhone 3G from its case for the first time in months and was pleasant surprised to re-discover what a well-designed product it is. The cases had been interfering with that for months.

So, now I'm considering going caseless from now on. I'll use a screen protector, but nothing else. Feels potentially dangerous, but also right.

What's your take? Case or not?

I always go caseless, and I don’t use a screen protector. I did with my iPhone for the first few months but since then have found my experience with the iPhone to be better as it was intended – a direct one.
