Anger Over iPhone Price Cuts

Thursday September 6, 2007
Apple iPhone

Apple's cutting of the price of the iPhone yesterday by $200 was good news for everybody - except those who already bought the iPhone at its old price. The iPhone was released on June 29, barely more than 60 days ago and the price has now been cut by 33%. This has led to a lot of wringing of hands, anger, wailing, philosophizing, and schadenfreude. Some have called for Apple to issues refunds to early adopters, give out iTunes Store credits, or take other steps to assuage early adopters.

Those who bought an iPhone in recent weeks should check the return policy of the store they bought it at (Apple or AT&T). If you're still within the return period, you should be able to get a refund for the price difference. This may also be true if you bought the iPhone on a credit card that offers price protection.

I bought an iPhone the day it was released and paid the full $600 for it. Am I angry? Not really. No one guaranteed me that the price of the thing was going to stay at $600. In fact, it would have been foolish to think so. I am a little surprised that the price drop came so soon. But c'est la vie. Still, if Apple wants to hand me an iTunes Store credit as a thanks for buying early, I won't say no.

Meanwhile, Steve Jobs says "tough luck, guys."
