Apple Releases New iPods, Cuts iPhone to $399, Adds WiFi iTunes Store

Wednesday September 5, 2007

At today's iPod media event, Apple made a huge number of new product and service announcements. They include:

  • A new version of the original iPod, now called the iPod Classic. Two models, 80GB and 160GB, running $249 and $349.
  • A new iPod, the iPod Touch, which incorporate much of the iPhone's interface, like CoverFlow, and includes WiFi for web browsing, YouTube, and wireless music purchases. 8GB and 16GB models run $299 and $399.
  • Cutting the price of the 8GB iPhone to $399 through the end of 2007 and the apparent elimination of the 4GB model.
  • A revised iPod nano with a bigger screen, video playback, and CoverFlow interface. Starts at US$149.
  • Custom ringtones made from iTunes Store songs for iPhone for an extra $0.99.
  • An iTunes Store wireless purchase option and related deal with Starbucks that lets users buy the song playing in Starbucks at that moment
  • A new version of iTunes, 7.4, to support these changes.
  • New iPod Shuffle colors, while retaining the same price and capacity.
