iPhone Round-up: Google Apps, Second-Generation Coming?

Wednesday May 30, 2007
A couple of interesting iPhone bitys have sprung up over the last couple of days. Even when most of the US is on vacation and slaving over hot barbecues, the iPhone news keeps a'rolling! The biggest news, because it hints at more likely scenarios, came out of an interview with Glenn Lurie, AT&T's president of national distribution and the company's iPhone lead, conducted by Brier Dudley of the Seattle Times. That interview revealed that:
  • Google applications are coming for the iPhone. (This could mean just better Google Maps integration, or it could extend as far as Google's online word processor and spreadsheet, which would be terrific.)
  • Unlimited data plans are going to be strong recommendations (which only seems reasonable)
More excerpts from that interview can be read at Dudley's blog. On the slightly less confirmed front, a number of websites, AppleInsider among them, are running stories saying that Taiwanese manufacturing giant Quanta has landed an order for a second-generation iPhone. The report, based on an article from a newspaper in Taiwan, claims that the company will start producing 5 million iPhones in September. The report is unconfirmed by both Quanta and Apple, so take it with a grain of salt.
