iPhone: 5 Years at AT&T, Pre-Paid Options?
Wednesday May 23, 2007
A couple of interesting news items about the launching in about a month (!!) iPhone have come out over the last day or two. Here's a quick summary:
- If you want an iPhone, you're going to have to switch to AT&T for your cell phone service or wait a really long time. Engadget has a story that reports that the iPhone is exclusive to AT&T for 5 years. The exclusivity is for a CDMA phone only, so in theory Apple could develop a phone using another cell standard, but that's a big chunk of time. This story, based on documents said to be culled from AT&T's own records, provides no insight into pricing for these options and isn't completely clear as to whether these options will actually be made available or not. We'll see.
- The iPhone may be available as a pre-paid handset and on pay-as-you-go plans, according to a report at AppleInsider.
