Canada Considers iPod Tax?
First the news that a New York legislator wants to make crossing the street while wearing an iPod a fine-able offense, now this. There's a war on the iPod going on.
Well, that may overstating it a tad (or, you know, a ton), but it's interesting to see legislative bodies try to deal with changing technologies.
The Canadian Private Copying Collective, the organization that collects and distributes royalties to artists and companies whose work is copied on CDR, DVD, hard drive, etc., is seeking to reinstate the MP3 player tax that was in effect in Canada until Dec. 2003. According to the CPCC, MP3 players like the iPod are recording devices (not players, strangely) and thus need to be taxed anywhere from $5 to $75. You can imagine who that extra charge is going to get passed on to. Canadians, it might be time to get on the phone to your legislators!
